The Slender Spoon by Custom Jigs and Spins is a fantastic little lure with tons of fluttering action that can catch all kinds of fish under the ice.
Spoons take their name from the fact that fisherman originally cut the eating end of actual spoons and started fishing with them. That primitive method worked but left a lot of room for improvment. There are countless ice fishing spoons on the market today but only a handful can be counted among the best.

The Slender Spoon quickly rose to the top of the field when it was released. Even though there are so many different kinds of spoons out there, none can really match the Slender Spoon when it comes to featherweight fluttering hardware.
A perfect ice fishing spoon
Everything from the thickness to the bends and split rings on the Slender Spoon is right. You can jig it furiously to bring in fish from far away, let it fall free to launch waiting predators into a feeding frenzy, or even dead stick it on the coldest of days to entice bites out of otherwise inactive fish.
You can also catch everything from northern pike to rainbow trout and panfish on the Slender Spoon as long as you match your lure size and tackle to the target. Hammered gold is a great finish for all species if you need a general idea of what to start out with.
The slightly more expensive Pro Series Slender Spoons take things to another level with superior finishes that are as good as any you would find on the market.
While some of the color varieties available in fishing equipment are pretty clearly designed to catch the eyes of fisherman more than fish, the finishes done by Custom Jigs and Spoons on their Pro Series spoons are certified fish slayers.
Colors and variations
Gold/Firetiger is without a doubt the best color for a broad array of situations, but other finishes like Electric Perch and Gold/Baby Walleye have also put a lot of fish on the ice for me over the last few seasons. I have actually caught fish with every color I have tried.
You can’t really go wrong with the Slender Spoon, no matter what color or series you fish. Everything from the plain gold original up to the expertly painted Glow Green Shadow delivers.
I usually tip the treble hook with a maggot or two if I am going for panfish or trout. When I am fishing for larger and more aggressive predators like pickerel, pike or walleye, I usually don’t bother tipping the spoon at all. They have so much action that it isn’t really necessary. You can just work the spoon under the ice in varying ways until you find something that works for you in the situation.
