Summary: This is a solid jig that can get down and catch fish. It doesn't necessarily stand out from the pack however.

Pretty Good

The Chekai Jig from the Custom Jigs and Spins company is one in a now crowded field of tungsten ice fishing jigs marketed in the United States. It is a tear drop sort of model that gets down deep fast while still being small and slick under the water.

The Custom Jigs and Spins Chekai Jig comes in a wide variety of colors. They all have their place, though I don’t think you have to carry every single color to catch fish. Even some of the real ice fishing giants admit that they only carry a few styles of jigs in a handful of sizes and colors.

In the case of the Chekai Jig, the best colors are probably clown and firetiger. Other colors like red glow also work quite well in the right situation. You find that the same colors work on most ice fishing lures. Glow colors work well in deep dark water. Light colors work well on bright days. Shiny finishes work well all the time. The Chekai Jig has you covered with all of those.

You can find Chekai Jigs in 4mm and 5mm versions. The four millimeter jigs have size 14 hooks. The five millimeters have size 10 hooks. Either one can catch panfish and trout. I go bigger if I’m after bigger fish with bigger mouths. Otherwise I stick with the smaller jigs so slow moving and sluggish panfish can suck them in without any problem. When it is cold a lot of fish slow down. Even the big fish can be more restrained. So you can even catch more big fish by using smaller hooks in certain conditions.

The Chekai Jigs are very well made with high quality sharp hooks. They also have great paint jobs and finishes that last the test of time. I have some from last season that caught tons of fish yet they still look pretty darn new. The hooks are still sharp too!

I don’t really have anything bad to say about the Chekai Jig at all. It is for all intents and purposes almost identical to the Clam Drop Jig which I included on my list of the best ice fishing jigs so you know its good. At the same time, the Custom Jigs and Spins Chekai almost always sells for a higher price than the Clam model.

I am not sure what goes behind the pricing of these products. I like the products both companies sell. Their jigs and spoons fill my tackle boxes. But when they sell two products that are almost identical, I usually make the rational move and buy whichever one is cheaper. You can’t blame me for that. Of course if I can’t find a Clam Drop Jig I will be more than happy to buy a Chekai Jig Instead, even if it does cost a little more.
